Therese Maria Gram’s Top Picks at Art Week Copenhagen

In the days between May 22 – 27, 2018, Art Week Copenhagen will bring together art lovers from all over the world in a celebration of the city’s diverse art scene. Here, independent curator and producer Therese Maria Gram shares her recommendations on what not to miss.

Gl. Holtegaard

I have been looking forward to seeing this exhibition at Gl Holtegaard, outside of Copenhagen. I find that Mette Winckelmann’s abstract paintings and her work with geometric patterns, fabric, colour and formats is a fascinating practice. Her site-specific painterly installation is a must-see and the exhibition evolves over the course of the exhibition period, something that I’m very curious to explore. In that sense this is not your usual painting exhibition.

Once you’ve travelled all the way to Gl. Holtegaard and seen the exhibition, you are in for a treat: the Baroque Garden with its classical sculptures and fruit trees is worth a visit and will be included in the ticket.

Nikolaj Kunsthal

To my great joy, the artist, activist and musician Anohni is opening an exhibition during Art Week Copenhagen. What space is more appropriate, to host artworks by an artists with so much on her heart, than the former church Nikolaj Kunsthal at the centre of the city.  Anohni, to some best known as the former singer of Anthony and the Johnsons speaks up in her music, performances and activism where she address political views on gender, minorities and climate issues.

To me, the power and the fragility of her voice and music is most fascinating, an intense and delicate balance that may be present in her artworks. I am curious to see the range of works from video, collages, photographs at Nikolaj Kunsthal in a comprehensive presentation, the first of its kind in the Nordic countries.

I trust this will be an interesting encounter and I don’t expect to leave the exhibition indifferent to what I’ve seen.

FABRIKKEN / The Factory of Art & Design foundation

During the weekend of the Art Week I want to visit Fabrikken / The Factory of Art & Design foundation and see the extensive programme ALT_CPH where artist-run and alternative exhibition spaces are dedicating the whole weekend to presenting performance art with live performances and an exhibition.

Performance art is gaining significant attention here in Copenhagen. Copenhagen Contemporary that re-opens next month wishes to add international performance art to their future programme and curators/performance artists are pushing for art-critics to consider this format when writing their reviews on art.

I have worked with performance art and find that the meeting between the artist and the audience to be a very intense experience, so if you’d like to experience this format and see for yourself I recommend you visit. The ticket gives you access to all three days and there is also a talk programme included.
