HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art

Next Level - enter a world of iconic video games
15 September, 2018 - 3 March, 2019

About the exhibition

In autumn 2018, HEART will be the first museum in Denmark ever to present an exhibition that shows and addresses video games as design. The exhibition will take visitors through a range of iconic computer and console games selected and curated in co-operation with Denmark’s leading expert on video games, Jacob Stegelmann, who has reviewed such games on his very popular TV show Troldspejlet on DR since 1989.

The realm of electronic video games will be explored through a range of rooms and installations reflecting different epochs in the field so far. From the alluring lights and sounds of 1980s video game arcades to 1990s teenage rooms equipped with PlayStations to our present-day online-based gaming universes, Next Level will be a (playable) journey through a medium which has – despite having in some way touched the lives of most people today – hitherto remained overlooked in a museum context.

The exhibition will elucidate game trends, design and aesthetics by observing and highlighting ground-breaking shifts and changes within the realm of video games, as evident on platforms such as Commodore64, Nintendo, PlayStation and XBOX, and in a range of games ranging from Pong, Pac-Man and Super Mario to more recent games such as World of Warcraft, Assasains Creed og Minecraft.
